Geological Origins

The Esterel massif was formed around 250 million years ago, when significant volcanic eruptions shaped its landscape. These eruptions gave the massif its characteristic red rocks, creating steep cliffs and mysterious caves that plunge into the Mediterranean. Successive eruptions formed a unique landscape, marked by striking contrasts between the red hues of the rocks and the deep blue of the sea. This volcanic past gives the Esterel a wild beauty and exceptional character.

Ancient and Medieval History

The Esterel massif has seen many civilizations, from the Ligurians to the Romans, who used its trails to connect the Mediterranean to the surrounding valleys. Roman remains testify to their presence, making the Esterel a commercial and strategic crossroads. In the Middle Ages, the massif became a refuge for monks and hermits seeking solitude, retreating to its caves and isolated abbeys. This spiritual and historical past has profoundly shaped the character of this wild and preserved region.

The Esterel in Modern Times

Starting in the 19th century, the Esterel massif began attracting more and more visitors with the development of roads and hiking trails. Writers and artists from the Romantic movement were fascinated by its wild landscapes, contributing to its fame. It was also during this period that the first efforts to protect nature began to preserve this unique region. Even today, the Esterel remains a must-visit destination for nature lovers, combining history and natural beauty.

The Esterel Today

Today, the Esterel massif is a protected natural site that attracts hiking, climbing, and diving enthusiasts. Its unique biodiversity and preserved landscapes make it a popular destination for those seeking to reconnect with nature. Marked trails allow visitors to discover the spectacular panoramas of the Corniche d'Or, while its secluded coves invite swimming in crystal-clear waters. This natural space is also a favored location for film shoots, thanks to its breathtaking scenery.
